The beatnik generation vs. the hippie movement
For my first Apollo project I decided to do a joint project with Mikayla, and together we decided to take a deeper look into what the Hippie Movement was about. During our research period we learned about the Beatnik Generation and how it paved the way for the Hippie Movement, so we decided to take a look at the Beatnik Generation as well and sort of tell the story of the Beatnik Generation and how it transformed into the Hippie Movement. For our first Apollo project we had to use the thinking skill contextualization, which is to put an event into context. We decided to put the Beatnik Generation and the Hippie Movement into context by comparing both of the movements main goals and how they went about making those goals a reality.

For our English portion of the Apollo project we decided to make a podcast that explains both the Beatnik Generation and the Hippie Movement. Originally we wanted to create a non-scripted podcast that pretty much just a natural conversation between the two of us, but we quickly learned that we both would either freeze up or get too off topic. This lead us to creating a more scripted podcast, but we still wanted to make it feel like a normal conversation by adding our opinions and insight during the podcast. During the podcast we discussed an overview of both of the events, how both events got started, who was involved in these events, what both parties were fighting for, we took a look into some influential pieces of writing from the Beatnik Generation, and how the Hippie Movement came to an end. How we used contextualization in our podcast is we told the story of the Beatnik Generation and how it transformed into the Hippie Movement. We answered the questions, who, what, when, where, and why in our podcast.

From the beginning of our project we knew we wanted to create a collage, the only problem is we couldn't decide what our final collage should look like. Our first idea was to create two doors being pulled open by hands and have hippies walking through the two doors. The doors would symbolize the Beatnik Generation and the hands would be them paving the way for the Hippie Movement. The hippies walking through would show how the Hippie Movement was inspire by the Beatnik Generation. This almost became our final idea until we came up with the idea to use Jack Kerouac's profile in our collage. This idea then morphed into having Jack Kerouac's profile as the main focal point in our collage. We then took a combination of images from magazines and printed images to create a story line coming our of Kerouac's head. This is to show him telling the story of the Beatnik Generation and the Hippie Movement. After completing out collage we noticed that there was a harsh line between the dark from Jack Kerouac's image and the bright colors from the small images at the top. To get rid of this harsh line we decided to bring down the color from around Kerouac's head and put some on his face so it is covering some of the dark and taking away the harsh line.
